CLAY McCORD - COMPOSER--LYRICIST--KEYBOARDS--VOCALS--PRODUCER

CLAY McCORD BIOGRAPHY

Clay McCord was born in Dallas, Texas, USA. He began the piano at age 4 and attended St. Marks School of Texas where he received voice training in the school choir at age nine. Over Christmas holidays the school choir would tour Texas. His parents immersed him in opera, summer musicals, and the symphony as a child. He formed a high school rock group, The Horizons, which won the school talent show that included his original compositions.  Dr. McCord continued his love of music at Stanford where he sang in the chorus and played in an occasional Wednesday Noon Musicale. The chorus annually appeared with the San Francisco Symphony under the leadership of Josef Krips. He participated in the drama group, Ram’s Head, more out of love of fun in music than love of performing, much as with his rock group.

Music was not to be his career as he became a practicing physician in California and Oregon, but the love of music never disappeared. The realization that making it in the music industry involves either luck or knowing someone wisely kept him from choosing that career. Even then, you have to be in the top 1 % of talent, be it classical or pop. Physician was the “safe” route to take. The world ALWAYS needs physicians. That is the wise and practical path.

Dr. McCord is a good example that creativity is optimized by formal and classical strict musical education. Some of the greatest jazz artists are also a testament to that fact.

Finally, if one wishes to create, one only has the creative window open for a limited time. The window may open but the timing might be such that there is no receptivity; then all might be for naught. The risks far outweigh the benefits if profit is one’s motive. So, it is best to use that window for one’s own pleasure; create for oneself, rather than rely on the accolades of others. That philosophy has taken Dr. McCord to this point in his life. With that, there can be no disappointments.
